Win a copy of the new film release ‘Wicked’

Wicked, the musical (part one) tells the first part of the story of Elphaba, the future wicked witch of the west, and the good witch Glinda and their respective journeys at Shiz University in Oz. However, a more subtle storyline but equally important is the relationship between Elphaba and her disabled sibling Nessarose. Elphaba loves her sister and feels a huge sense of responsibility towards her and is asked by her father to look after her when she begins university. Nessarose is also very obviously favoured by her father, whilst Elphaba is simultaneously ignored yet relied upon in equal measure- dismissed by her sister as overprotective and embarrassing but needed to provide care.

Elphaba presents as a classic sibling – she has an over-developed sense of responsibility for her sister, tries hard to stay under the radar and please those around her and has her own needs ignored and lacks confidence in her own abilities. What is also true is that as the story develops, we see hope for Elphaba’s future – with encouragement and belief from others, her confidence grows, her skills develop and she is seen by those around her as someone special in her own right.

Wicked part one culminates in Elphaba defying gravity, leaving Oz to seek independence and be true to herself – a future which we would aspire to for all siblings.
