Siblings and Talking About Disability
Siblings often have lots of questions about their brother or sister who has a disability, illness or health condition. This might be if there is a new diagnosis or if their brother or sister has had the condition for a long time. They want to know what’s going on, how it might change things, how it might affect them or what’s going to happen in the future. Siblings also find it hard to ask these questions sometimes. They worry that it will upset their parents or they think that nobody will listen to them.
We know that siblings find life easier if things are talked about. We have lots of information on our YoungSibs website to help siblings talk about disability. You can
- Read our Information about Conditions
- Write a list of things you want to know about and give it to a parent to discuss with you
- Tell a parent if you don’t understand and keep asking questions – even a parent can find it hard to understand disability
- Read about what you can do if you are Thinking about the Future
it really helps if you understand what is going on. It’s important that you can talk about disability and what life is like for you. Remember, you are not alone.
