Challenging behaviour is when children or adults with learning disabilities or autism behave in ways that hurt themselves or others. They might hit, kick, bite, scratch or scream. Siblings tell us that when their disabled brother or sister has challenging behaviour it can make them feel unsafe, sad or frightened. It is important to get help. It is not OK to get hurt.
Some things you can do if your brother or sister has challenging behaviour
1
Ask your parent to make a plan with you to help you to stay safe.
2
Tell somebody if you get hurt.
3
Tell a teacher or a person you trust about what things are like for you at home and at school.
4
Contact Childline if you need help or support at anytime of day or night. Call 999 if you feel that you or a member of your family is in danger.
"I told my mum that I was scared when my sister started hitting things and screaming. We made a plan to help me stay safe. I go to my bedrooom now, and stay there until things have calmed down."
